Embarking on a new career can be daunting, especially if you don't know exactly what you want to do. As someone who is looking for a new job, you might be surprised to know that the vast majority of those who work within the UK recruitment industry were once in the same position and simply 'fell' into the sector.
Whether you are currently still in education, employed in an unfulfilling job, or looking to return to work after a career break, then the recruitment industry might just be the industry in which you can flourish. For a variety of reasons, no formal qualifications are required to enter the industry, but it does provide almost instant opportunities for those who are committed and have a hunger for success.
It is no secret that the recruitment industry isn't for everyone as it is hard work and you are constantly faced with fresh challenges. You will also have to think on your feet when dealing with the changing requirements of both candidates and clients, but the rewards can be both lucrative and satisfying.
The event has been designed to give you insights into how the industry works and to help you decide if it is for you. Deliberately informal, you will be able to meet employers in a relaxed setting and talk to those who have succeeded in the industry.

I’ve worked in recruitment, sales and service my whole career and loved all of it! I started as a trainee with Reed, and progressed to Consultant, Temporaries Consultant, and Branch Manager, building and running a top 10 sales office. I founded my first business in 1992, a small consultancy providing permanent, contract and temporary recruitment services, developed it to 24 staff and an annual turnover of £4m, before selling 12 years later. For the next 2.5 years, I worked with the REC to establish the UK’s first industry-specific enterprise support service for Recruitment Industry micro businesses and SMEs.
I founded Absolutely Business in 2006, a bespoke training and development company, that genuinely grows businesses. I have had the honour to support fantastic quality businesses and their people to maximise potential and turn their ambitious goals into reality.
I have two: “make a difference” and “never stop learning”.

Her career in and connection to the recruitment industry spans two decades. From humble beginnings as a rookie consultant, to a top performing senior management role. Before gaining employment as a recruitment consultant Clariss worked as a teacher. She found she was struggling to find jobs which fitted her skills set and gave me her a varied work life. She also found people were not keen to employ her due to lack of office experience.
After starting with Meridian as an internal temp she quickly became a permanent member of staff. She has been given so many new opportunities and scope for development. Clariss tells us "My day to day work life is very varied; one day I could be registering candidates and the next I can be on sales visits. The best part about recruitment is receiving a phone call from a candidate who has been offered a job and being thanked for helping change their career.
Working for Meridian has been fantastic for my career. They are a fantastic company who take pride in promoting internally. The atmosphere is fantastic in the offices and it feels like one big family!"
